Now more than ever, it's not enough to have affordable housing options for rural areas, but also options that put issues facing rural areas into consideration and help solve them.
After attending the Jonam Development Conference 2019 in Pakwach District, Uganda and presenting a conceptual design proposal for a community resource centre, IODS Design also came up with Modular Village Homes, inspired by the development goals discussed at the conference.
DESIGN CONCEPT
The Traditional African Homestead
The concept was drawn from that of a typical Traditional Luo Homestead - quite representative of many African Kraals, known for their communal /family design made to last through generations that thrive on agriculture and sustainable livelihood.
The Homestead Design also presents sustainable & sanitation features including a simple toilet / bathroom with roof water retention, a visitor water point, bio & plastic waste pits, as well as an outdoor kitchen, all designed around a centric point. The water collection can feed the food forests surrounding each homestead, which are also maintained by collected waste. The concept is meant to encourage self-sufficient and sustainable homesteads that can also present opportunities for home owners to earn from the system.
The photo below shows one of the first trials of Modular Village Homes. We are going to improve this concept over time and hope to make a real difference in rural development in the near future.
